VIN Number Lookup — Decode Any VIN Free
A VIN number lookup reads the 17 characters themselves. Type them in below and the decoder names the manufacturer, the region and country of assembly and the model year — free, with no account, and without the number ever leaving your browser. What happened to the car afterwards is a separate search.

What Each VIN Character Means
A VIN is not a random string. Seventeen characters, three blocks, and every position carries something: read them in order and the number tells you who built the car, where, and when.
On a narrow screen, scroll the strip sideways to see all seventeen positions.
| Positions | What it is | What it encodes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | World region | The continent the car was assembled in: 1–5 North America, J–R Asia, S–Z Europe, 6–7 Oceania, 8–9 South America, A–H Africa. |
| 2–3 | Country and manufacturer | With the first character these form the WMI, the World Manufacturer Identifier — the plant group that built the car. JT is Toyota in Japan; 1C4 is Jeep in the United States. |
| 4–8 | VDS — the car itself | Model, body type, engine, transmission and restraint systems, coded to each manufacturer’s own scheme. This is why no free decoder returns an exact trim: the table behind these characters is the maker’s property. |
| 9 | Check digit | Not information but arithmetic — a weighted sum of the other sixteen characters. Mistype one character, or invent a VIN, and this digit stops matching. |
| 10 | Model year | One character for the year the car was built as: A is 2010, M is 2021, R is 2024. The full set of codes is in the table below. |
| 11 | Assembly plant | The manufacturer’s own code for the factory. Two otherwise identical cars from two plants differ here and nowhere else. |
| 12–17 | Serial number | The unit number on the production line — the part that makes the VIN unique to your car and to no other vehicle ever built. |
Three letters never appear anywhere in a VIN: I, O and Q were left out so that nothing could be read as a 1 or a 0. A “VIN” containing them is mistyped or invented.
VIN Model Year Codes (Position 10)
The tenth character carries the model year. The cycle runs thirty years and then repeats, so a code that decodes to a year in the future belongs to the previous cycle — a 1995 car rather than a 2025 one. The letters I, O, Q, U and Z and the digit 0 are never used.

Free VIN Number Lookup: What You Get Without an Account
Everything on this page is free and needs no sign-up, because the decoder never asks us anything — it reads the number in your browser and works out what the characters mean. A VIN number lookup free of charge gives you:
- Whether the number is a valid VIN at all — length, permitted characters, structure
- The manufacturer, the region and the country the car was assembled in
- The model year, and the WMI, VDS and VIS split of the number
What the number alone cannot tell you is what happened to the car. Sales, mileage, damage and photographs are records, and records are bought from the auction sources lot by lot. A VIN lookup free of charge ends exactly where the history begins — set out honestly on the free VIN check page.
VIN Decoder Check by Brand: Common WMI Codes
The first three characters name the maker without any database at all. These are the codes that come up most often on cars imported into Nigeria; the decoder above holds several hundred more.
| Make | Common WMI codes |
|---|---|
| Toyota | 2T1 · 2T3 · 3MY · 3TM |
| Honda | 19X · 1HF · 1HG · 2HG |
| Lexus | 2T2 · 58A · JTH · JTJ |
| Ford | 1FA · 1FD · 1FM · 1FT |
| Jeep | 1C4 · 1J4 · 1J8 · ZAC |
| Chevrolet | 1G1 · 1GB · 1GC · 1GN |
| Nissan | 1N4 · 1N6 · 3N1 · 3N6 |
| Hyundai | 5NM · 5NP · 5NT · KM8 |
| Kia | 3KP · 5XX · 5XY · KNA |
| Mercedes-Benz | 4JG · 55S · NMB · W1K |
| BMW | 3MF · 3MW · 4US · 5UX |
| Dodge | 1B3 · 1D4 · 1D7 · 1D8 |
A code missing from this list is not a problem — the decoder carries the full table. Nor does a make have to be in our catalogue to be decoded: the catalogue lists the cars we already hold records for, not the cars the decoder can read.
VIN Lookup vs VIN Check: What Is the Difference
A VIN lookup reads the number; a VIN check reads the records behind it. The decoder on this page can tell you that a car is a 2014 Jeep built in the United States, because the factory wrote that into the characters. It cannot tell you that the same car was sold at a Copart yard with flood damage two years later, because that is not in the number — it is in the auction record.
Use them in that order. Decode first, to confirm the number the seller sent you is real and describes the car in the photographs; then run the check to see what the car has been through since it left the plant.
In Nigeria those same 17 characters are usually called the chassis number, so a chassis number lookup and a VIN lookup are one and the same search. Looking for a car by its Nigerian plate instead? That starts on the plate number page.
VIN lookup questions
What is a VIN number lookup?
It means reading the 17-character number itself rather than searching a database. The characters encode the manufacturer, the country and plant of assembly and the model year, and a decoder simply translates them. A VIN number lookup answers “what is this car”; a VIN check answers “what has happened to it”.
Can I do a free VIN number lookup?
Yes. The decoder here is free, needs no account and sends nothing to our servers. What costs money anywhere on the internet is history: auction lots, odometer readings, damage records and photographs are bought from the sources, so no honest service hands all of that over for nothing.
What does each character in a VIN mean?
Characters 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer and the country, 4 to 8 describe the model, engine and body, 9 is a check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the assembly plant and 12 to 17 are the serial number of that individual car. The table above breaks it down position by position.
How do I find the model year in a VIN?
Look at the tenth character. The digits 1 to 9 cover 2001 to 2009, and the letters run from A for 2010 onwards, skipping I, O, Q, U and Z. The codes repeat every thirty years, so an old car can share a letter with a new one — the rest of the number settles which it is.
Does a VIN lookup show the owner?
No. Ownership inside Nigeria sits with the FRSC and the state licensing offices, and no decoder anywhere reads it out of the number — a VIN carries factory data only. To look something up about a vehicle registered here, start from its plate number rather than its VIN.
You have decoded the number. Now check the car.
The decoder tells you what the factory built. The report tells you what happened afterwards: auction lots, mileage, damage and the photographs taken before any repair.
