A free VIN accident check is, in practice, a question about auction records: a damaged car sold at Copart or IAAI is photographed and described before it goes under the hammer. When the VIN is in those records, you see:

  • which parts of the car were damaged, and whether the airbags had deployed
  • the title the auction assigned to the lot — salvage, flood, or clean
  • the odometer reading on the day of the sale, which makes a later rollback visible
