Plate code

APP Plate Number Meaning: Apapa, Lagos

The APP plate number is registered in Apapa Local Government Area, Lagos. Those three letters record where the vehicle was first put on the road — not who drives it, and not where it is today.

Nigerian number plate with the APP code — Apapa, Lagos
A plate issued in Apapa carries the APP code. The characters after it are a sample, not a real registration.

Apapa uses APP on its plates. The district counted 217,362 residents at the 2006 census, and its code is one of twenty in the Lagos State directory. A plate is a registration record before it is anything else, which is why our lookup answers three letters with a district and a state, never with an owner's name.

What the APP Code Does and Does Not Tell You

A Nigerian plate carries the code of the local government area that issued the registration, so APP places the paperwork in Apapa. It does not follow the car afterwards: a vehicle sold across state lines keeps its plate until it is re-registered, which is why a APP plate away from Lagos is a question for the seller rather than a finding in itself.

The letters also say nothing about the holder, the model or the history of the vehicle. Colours and special series are a separate system, explained on the code hub; what the car itself has been through — auction lots, damage, mileage at sale — is recorded against its VIN and travels with the car even when the plate changes.

Questions about the APP plate number

What does the APP plate number mean?

APP is the registration code of Apapa Local Government Area in Lagos. A vehicle wearing it was registered there; the three digits after the letters are its serial inside that LGA, and the last two letters are the series.

Which state is a APP plate number from?

Lagos. The code identifies the local government area — Apapa — and the state is printed on the plate in words above the number.

Can I find out who owns a APP plate number?

No, and not from any public source. Registration holders are personal data held by the FRSC and the state motor vehicle administration agency, released to the police, the courts and insurers through their own channels. What is public is the code, which is what this page publishes.

Is a APP plate valid outside Lagos?

Yes. A Nigerian plate is valid nationwide, and the code simply records where the registration was issued. Re-registration is what changes the code, and it is not required merely because the vehicle has moved.

How do I check a full APP plate number?

Use the plate lookup on our verify page: type the whole plate, and it reads the three-letter prefix and returns the local government area and the state. To find out what the vehicle has been through, check it by VIN instead.

Have a whole APP plate, not just the code?

The lookup takes the full plate and returns the local government area behind it. For the history of the vehicle — auction records, damage, mileage and photographs — check it by VIN.
