Plate code

SGR Plate Number Meaning: Shagari, Sokoto

The SGR plate number is registered in Shagari Local Government Area, Sokoto. Those three letters record where the vehicle was first put on the road — not who drives it, and not where it is today.

Nigerian number plate with the SGR code — Shagari, Sokoto
A plate issued in Shagari carries the SGR code. The characters after it are a sample, not a real registration.

Shagari registers vehicles as SGR. The 2006 census counted 156,413 residents over 1,332 km², roughly 117 for every square kilometre. The letters follow the vehicle rather than the driver and survive every change of hands it goes through. Nothing after them on the plate names anywhere at all.

What the SGR Code Does and Does Not Tell You

A Nigerian plate carries the code of the local government area that issued the registration, so SGR places the paperwork in Shagari. It does not follow the car afterwards: a vehicle sold across state lines keeps its plate until it is re-registered, which is why a SGR plate away from Sokoto is a question for the seller rather than a finding in itself.

The letters also say nothing about the holder, the model or the history of the vehicle. Colours and special series are a separate system, explained on the code hub; what the car itself has been through — auction lots, damage, mileage at sale — is recorded against its VIN and travels with the car even when the plate changes.

Questions about the SGR plate number

What does the SGR plate number mean?

Which state is a SGR plate number from?

Sokoto. The code identifies the local government area — Shagari — and the state is printed on the plate in words above the number.

Have a whole SGR plate, not just the code?

The lookup takes the full plate and returns the local government area behind it. For the history of the vehicle — auction records, damage, mileage and photographs — check it by VIN.
