LMU Plate Number Meaning: Gbako, Niger

The LMU plate number is registered in Gbako Local Government Area, Niger. Those three letters record where the vehicle was first put on the road — not who drives it, and not where it is today.

Nigerian number plate with the LMU code — Gbako, Niger
A plate issued in Gbako carries the LMU code. The characters after it are a sample, not a real registration.

LMU belongs to Gbako. The 2006 census put 127,466 residents on 1,753 km², about 73 for every square kilometre. Codes are not batches or years of issue, so an old plate decodes to the same district as a new one.

What the LMU Code Does and Does Not Tell You

A Nigerian plate carries the code of the local government area that issued the registration, so LMU places the paperwork in Gbako. It does not follow the car afterwards: a vehicle sold across state lines keeps its plate until it is re-registered, which is why a LMU plate away from Niger is a question for the seller rather than a finding in itself.

The letters also say nothing about the holder, the model or the history of the vehicle. Colours and special series are a separate system, explained on the code hub; what the car itself has been through — auction lots, damage, mileage at sale — is recorded against its VIN and travels with the car even when the plate changes.
