Plate code

KEM Plate Number Meaning: Isi-Uzo, Enugu

The KEM plate number is registered in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, Enugu. Those three letters record where the vehicle was first put on the road — not who drives it, and not where it is today.

Nigerian number plate with the KEM code — Isi-Uzo, Enugu
A plate issued in Isi-Uzo carries the KEM code. The characters after it are a sample, not a real registration.

KEM is the Isi-Uzo code, seat at Ikem. The 2006 census counted 148,415 people over 877 km², roughly 169 to the square kilometre. Codes name local government areas, never model years or batches, so an old plate decodes exactly like a new one.

What the KEM Code Does and Does Not Tell You

A Nigerian plate carries the code of the local government area that issued the registration, so KEM places the paperwork in Isi-Uzo. It does not follow the car afterwards: a vehicle sold across state lines keeps its plate until it is re-registered, which is why a KEM plate away from Enugu is a question for the seller rather than a finding in itself.

The letters also say nothing about the holder, the model or the history of the vehicle. Colours and special series are a separate system, explained on the code hub; what the car itself has been through — auction lots, damage, mileage at sale — is recorded against its VIN and travels with the car even when the plate changes.

Questions about the KEM plate number

What does the KEM plate number mean?

KEM is the registration code of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area in Enugu. A vehicle wearing it was registered there; the three digits after the letters are its serial inside that LGA, and the last two letters are the series.

Which state is a KEM plate number from?

Enugu. The code identifies the local government area — Isi-Uzo — and the state is printed on the plate in words above the number.

Have a whole KEM plate, not just the code?

The lookup takes the full plate and returns the local government area behind it. For the history of the vehicle — auction records, damage, mileage and photographs — check it by VIN.
