AFR Plate Number Meaning: Ahiazu-Mbaise, Imo

The AFR plate number is registered in Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area, Imo. Those three letters record where the vehicle was first put on the road — not who drives it, and not where it is today.

Nigerian number plate with the AFR code — Ahiazu-Mbaise, Imo
A plate issued in Ahiazu-Mbaise carries the AFR code. The characters after it are a sample, not a real registration.

Ahiazu Mbaise, seat at Afororu, registers vehicles as AFR. Its population was 170,902 at the 2006 census, spread over 114 km² — roughly 1,499 for every square kilometre. Imo State uses twenty-seven codes, one per local government area, and a car keeps the one it was papered under until it is registered elsewhere.

What the AFR Code Does and Does Not Tell You

A Nigerian plate carries the code of the local government area that issued the registration, so AFR places the paperwork in Ahiazu-Mbaise. It does not follow the car afterwards: a vehicle sold across state lines keeps its plate until it is re-registered, which is why a AFR plate away from Imo is a question for the seller rather than a finding in itself.

The letters also say nothing about the holder, the model or the history of the vehicle. Colours and special series are a separate system, explained on the code hub; what the car itself has been through — auction lots, damage, mileage at sale — is recorded against its VIN and travels with the car even when the plate changes.

Questions about the AFR plate number

What does the AFR plate number mean?

AFR is the registration code of Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area in Imo. A vehicle wearing it was registered there; the three digits after the letters are its serial inside that LGA, and the last two letters are the series.

Which state is a AFR plate number from?

Imo. The code identifies the local government area — Ahiazu-Mbaise — and the state is printed on the plate in words above the number.

Have a whole AFR plate, not just the code?

The lookup takes the full plate and returns the local government area behind it. For the history of the vehicle — auction records, damage, mileage and photographs — check it by VIN.
